Our natural environment and the people in it make up our lives. Every day is unique and each person has individual character. I try to capture fleeting moments of beauty found in nature and in people by painting ‘en plein air’ and traditional portraits.
Just like the Impressionists, I believe the landscape is best described with notes of color. Academic training in fine art began at Interlochen Arts Academy in 2002 with drawing from direct observation, and exploring basic color theory by beginning with a monochomatic pallet. I began to study the nude figure at Kendall College of Art and Design, and found myself looking to master painters for guidance. In 2005, I transferred to the University of Michigan to complete a Bachelor’s Degree in Art History in 2008. Serious consideration of what art has meant to different cultures over time has helped me find my niche as a painter in 21st century Michigan. I currently live in Ann Arbor and work at the Saline Picture Frame Company. For portraits and private commissions please email me at GRMessing@gmail.com
